Santa Monica Solstice Display, Charlie the Gnome,  is Vandalized!
This year, Atheists United put up a playful image, a gnome with the face of Charles Darwin and the message, "Reason's Greetings from Atheists United.org." On the 22nd, a member visited the site and found "Charlie's" face had been bashed in.  Atheists United President Bobbie Kirkhart noted, "Few religious people would go to such extremes to suppress alternate views, but there are always some people so insecure in their own beliefs that they cannot tolerate anyone who believes differently."

A Statement of Postive Atheism
Monday, 24 August 2009 21:14

Atheists United is a positive atheist community.  As such, we believe in equal treatment and opportunity among all people, regardless of race, world view, sex or sexual preference.

Another feature of positive atheism is the absence of dogma.  Its founder Gora said, “The only imperative is honesty.”

Because of this distrust for catechisms and similar “moral laws,” we tolerate members and friends who may not share the tenets of positive atheism.  So long as they do not pretend to speak for Atheists United or misrepresent our belief, they are welcome.

AU Responds to Death of Dr. Tiller
Written by Brian Parra
Monday, 01 June 2009 00:00
The members of Atheists United join people everywhere in mourning the violent death of Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Tiller's work in doing necessary late-term abortions showed courage and compassion, traits he likely attributed to his Christian faith. The suspect in this case drove a car with a Christian fish and also no doubt saw this crime as a religious duty.

The role of faith in this tragedy underscores the need for all people to become responsible for their own moral choices and not attribute them to a god. The suspect in this case was no doubt encouraged by such religious groups as Operation Rescue, whose founder, amazingly found little sympathy for Dr. Tiller, whom he called a "mass murderer."

"I believe that many of the anti-abortion people who have stated regret for this crime are sincere," Bobbie Kirkhart, President of Atheists United said. It is too bad that they do not understand that when they equate their opinion with God's law, they encourage such terrorist acts."

PRESS RELEASE: AU Reponds to Prop 8 Ruling
Written by Brian Parra
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 17:59

Atheists United notes with regret California Supreme Court's "compromise" decision upholding Proposition 8 and thus requiring the state to use a religious definition of marriage, which has no place in civil law.

"Although we are happy for the couples whose marriages are allowed to stand, we do not believe that forcing government to use outdated religious concepts in its civil law is a matter of compromise," said Communications Director Brian Parra.

In light of the recent and rapid change of public opinion, the group anticipates a new initiative to permit same-sex marriage, and promises it will continue to support the rights of all Californians and the responsibility of the state to be truly religion neutral.
Noting that some religious people were frightened into voting for Proposition 8 by a warning that churches would have to perform weddings for same-sex couples, the group's president Bobbie Kirkhart said, "We believe in freedom of conscience, and I pledge that if that were ever to happen, atheists would defend the rights of the church." She noted that if the church were required to follow state law in such matters, Catholic priests would long ago have been forced to marry divorced couples.
