Atheists United is the largest freethought organization in the Los Angeles area, and one of the largest atheist organizations in the country. We've been around since 1982.
| Our Mission:
|
Atheists United is the Los Angeles affiliate of Atheist Alliance International. We offer a community to those who struggle to live rationally in a world where religious and civic leaders and followers alike continue to promote the need and expectation for all to believe in supernatural deities.
Our offices and board meetings are at the Center for Inquiry / West in Hollywood, CA. We are a decentralized and democratic organization, with groups meeting across the Southland throughout the month. While each neighborhood group has a facilitator, the group members determine the format and content of their meetings. Some groups host a monthly speaker; others set topics for open discussion; and others simply meet to share good conversation over a meal.
(Note: We have more people than we have groups, and so are always looking for people who are willing to facilitate a new group in their area! We can provide deposits, advertising, programs, and other guidance to get you started. If you are interested, please contact us!)
We also offer a full program of educational and social activities throughout the year, including an annual Freethought ArtFest, Equinox and Solstice festivals, awards banquets, speech contests and other public-speaking forums, and gatherings.
We are proud to be sponsors of Freethinkers' Toastmasters. For those who speak Spanish, we have our spanish-speaking group, Ateos Unidos, which meets on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 11AM to 1PM.
Our community outreach efforts include participation in: The Toys for Tots program at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital; Adopt-A-Highway programs in both Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo; L.A. Works, where we join with other organizations across the city to help renovate buildings and grounds in run-down LA neighborhoods; AIDSWalk L.A.; Food Not Bombs of Los Angeles; and many more.
In the spirit of supporting the wall of separation between state and church, we monitor ongoing political events and provide information to our membership and to the news media when we observe a breach forming in that wall. We work with other organizations to protect our First Amendment rights. Our policy has always been one of positive action, always offering alternative, legal solutions.
We are a vibrant community with a wide variety of views and perspectives, brought together through the common worldview of Atheism. Come visit us at one of our monthly meetings -- we'll make sure you feel welcome!
