Santa Monica Nativity Scene/Winter Display Videos

winter-displayThe annual Winter Display program was created by Santa Monica nearly 60 years ago to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with a month long nativity scene that extended over a city block. Over the decades, Atheists United has fought to end this illegal use of government resources.

In 2011, Atheists United, Damon Vix and other secularists put up several displays in protest of this blatant government support of religion. Below are two videos that highlight the work to finally end this program and restore balance back to the community.

During the 30th anniversary party for Atheists United, Michael Khalili and Damon Vix talk about the history of the Santa Monica Winter Display.

In 2012, the city held 2 special hearings to decide what to do. Atheists United organized its members to join the hearings and speak out against the government’s support of religion. This video is a composite of two council meetings. You can hear the two sides argue for/against the Winter Display.

Highlights from the nativity scene supporters:

  • Atheists are accused of being outsiders and not part of the community.
  • Religious people claim the Winter Display represents all people (except atheists).
  • Love & peace… go away atheists.
  • Atheists are a minority that shouldn’t be heard.
  • Religious majority groups who got special favoritism for nearly 60 years are the victims.
  • Atheists are compared to extremist groups.
  • Winter Display is inviting to the Christian community, never mind anyone else.
  • Atheists are just a group of haters.

First meeting:

  • We waited 6 hours to speak during the first meeting.
  • 13 people spoke against the displays.
  • 10 of those were thanks to Atheists United.
  • 14 people spoke in favor of the displays.

Second meeting:

  • 12 people spoke against the displays.
  • 11 of them were thanks to Atheists United.
  • 24 people spoke in favor of the displays.

We have the law on our side and we will continue to fight for separation of government and religion.
