Atheists United Members Open Their Veins For The Cedars-Sinai Bloodmobile

Blood drive bus

The Atheists United blood drive during and after the August 25 general meeting was a resounding success. The Cedars-Sinai Bloodmobile with its staff of very pleasant nurses and technicians was on site from noon until 6 p.m.

During that time donors followed a simple four-step process: register, record medical history, receive a mini-physical and give blood. Afterward they relaxed and enjoyed refreshments furnished by C-S. Center For Inquiry-LA graciously let AU use the building past our regular event time and 30 people each parted with one pint of blood. All in all a painless and very rewarding experience.

Thanks to everyone involved, especially to AU member Gula Gulina who organized the entire event. Special thanks to those who traveled from afar just to donate, to those who got woozy and fainty, and to those who were rejected because of low iron (please try again next time).

All donors will get a letter after their blood is tested for infectious diseases and to determine their blood type. Donors take note of your blood type—you just might be a Universal donor; type O-negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood types; Type AB-positive plasma can also be transfused to patients of all other blood types. These types of blood are always in great demand.

Encouraged by the generosity and enthusiasm of all who participated in this drive, Atheists United would like to make this a regular event—four times a year during the Equinox and Solstice celebrations. Mark your calendars for the next drive, December 22, 2013—the Cedars Sinai Blood mobile will be back for our winter solstice party. Click here for more information about future blood drives.

Thank you again to CFI-LA and to all donors for proving once again that we can be good without god(s).
