My Week in Atheism is a film by John Christy about a Christian’s up-close encounter with atheism in an attempt to learn while focusing on the reality of two opposing worldviews with his friend, and atheist talk show host, David Smalley.
As a devout Christian (John Christy) and an atheist activist (David Smalley) travel together to secular conventions, university campuses, and a live talk show, they struggle to maintain a close friendship while protecting their beliefs. Exploring discussions with a few atheists along the way they find that while they may have many differences they are open to dialogue and this inevitably leads to discovery.
The screening and Q&A after will be the wrap up to David Smalley’s Dogma Debate tour with Dr. Ryan Bell from A Year Without God.
David Smalley is a former Christian musician whose education in psychology, sociology, and world religions, with a deep-dive study of Christianity for more than 14 years, resulted in his atheism. He later became a secular activist and avid speaker, writer, and radio host. David quickly grew Dogma Debate from an idea to an iHeartRadio show with over 1 million downloads and over 160,000 listeners per month. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of both Secular World and American Atheist magazines, the author of Baptized Atheist, and founder of AtheistAudiobooks.com
Dr. Ryan Bell, a Christian and former pastor for 19 years, he resigned his position due to theological and practical differences in 2013. As an adjunct professor he has taught subjects ranging from intercultural communication to bioethics. He started a blog A Year without God to document his journey of trying to live “as an atheist”, reading books by atheist authors and attending atheist gatherings.
