(Tues., Jan. 8, 2019) Los Angeles. — Atheists United (AU), the oldest atheist organization in Southern California, has hired a full-time executive director. Established in 1982 to provide a values-based community for secular people, Atheists United has become one of the most recognized atheists groups in the nation, prompting the hire of the organization’s first-ever full time paid staffer.
AU’s board announced this month that it is bringing on Evan Clark, a professional activist and organizer with more than 10 years of atheist and humanist advocacy and community building experience.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for us,” says AU President Bill Hausman. “We are working to increase our membership, enhance the contributions we make to the regional freethought community, and strengthen our presence in, and impact on, society at large. Hiring Evan is a monumental step toward achieving those goals.”
AU exists to provide community for people who wish to have ethically centered lives without religion. The group promotes secular government and works to serve the public good.
“Younger Americans are turning away from religious beliefs and institutions at rates never before seen in American history.” says Clark. “And now, they’re looking to us for community.
There’s never been a more exciting time to work in secular community organizing and Atheists United intends to be on the forefront of innovation in the space.”
Clark is the founder of Spectrum Experience LLC, the nation’s first humanist communications firm, and has traveled the country speaking to freethought groups about humanism, innovation and values-centered community building. He attended California Lutheran University (CLU) in Thousand Oaks, California and founded the school’s first Secular Student Alliance chapter. Clark was also CLU’s first openly atheist student body president and went on to co-found the Humanist Community of Ventura County. He serves as board chair for the national Secular Student Alliance and co-hosts the Humanist Experience Podcast, the official podcast of the charity Foundation Beyond Belief.
Clark’s immediate priorities for AU include building new partnerships with value-aligned organizations, developing original millennial-targeted programming and modernizing the membership experience.
