You’re like a bird who’s outgrown the cage,” said the man who was president of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for the LA County region, and, at the time, Ryan Bell’s boss. It had occurred to Ryan that he had outgrown the Church, yet he preferred to stay on and continue his work as a minister. But at that moment, it hit him like “a wack upside the head with a two-by-four” that, as he says, “the one door in the (metaphorical) house i had not opened was the one that said ‘there isn’t really a god, after all.’” all the old arguments like that “the sense of god’s absence is the sign of his presence,” withered away for good. not long after that realization, Ryan, from the last day of 2013 to the last day of 2014, experimented “living without god” for a year. after that, like the man who breaks away from his chains in Plato’s cavern, there was no going back. he is the national campus organizer for the Secular Student alliance, a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and host of the popular weekly podcast Life Without god.
