Atheists United is hosting Dave Warnock, a former conservative Evangelical pastor and church leader for almost 40 years. In March 2019 Dave was diagnosed with ALS and is expected to have just a few years left to live.
About ten years ago, he began a process of examining and investigating the faith claims of Evangelical Christianity- for the first time in his life…and came to the conclusion that the faith he had given his life to was something he could no longer embrace. At first calling himself an agnostic, in the last few years he has purposefully begun to embrace the word ‘Atheist’. In so doin, he’s doing what he can to de-stigmatize this word (which simply means “non-theist”) and seeking to show that atheists can be good people- exhibiting the same morals and values as people of faith.
Dave is living his death out loud and is being supported by his secular community. However, he has been noticing a stark contrast between how his secular friends react to his dying versus his evangelical friends. He explains that Christians have an afterlife “fetish” which disconnects them from this life, from humanity, and from reality. They struggle to support Dave by being fixated on Dave’s eternity. It disconnects them from his pain and it makes it hard for them to express their own. They find themselves unable to deal with the reality of the world they live in when it doesn’t measure up to the way they want it to be. They focus on afterlife because this life is too confusing, unpredictable, and chaotic. They’re left feeling helpless except to pray. Meanwhile, Dave’s secular community is appropriately rendered speechless and sad but not afraid to crawl into the pain with him: to love, laugh, and cry together as moments continue to be made. They say things like, “call me any time” and “I’m here for you”. They admit there’s nothing they can do but stay focused on sharing life with him as much as they can so that the remaining days are maximized.
Dave is energized to speak about the contrast between religious and non-religious people as they manage death and dying as well as his experience of “dying out loud”. Dave has already appeared on Life After God with Ryan Bell, Dogma Debate with David Smalley, The Atheist Experience, and many more.
