Stories of human rights being trampled are broadcast weekly. Yet the mechanism for change – the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights - has been around for 72 years. “Seeing a Bright Future Clearly: A 2020 Vision of Human Rights,” is a celebration of this historic milestone presented by the SoCal Secular Coalition (SCSC) and United Nation Associations of Orange County and San Diego. This event will feature live music, informational videos, and the following speakers on current problem areas:

• Ford Roosevelt, Advisory Board Member, UNA San Diego - reflecting on his grandmother’s crucial role as principal architect in the creation of the UN Declaration of Human Rights in 1948

• Victor Schachter, Founder and President of the Foundation for the Sustainable Rule of Law Initiatives – applying the UDHR for alternative dispute resolution in developing countries

• Rima Nashashibi, Founder and President of Global Hope 365, which launched the California Coalition to End Child Marriage – advocating across California to end the human rights abuse of minors bound into marriage

• Carly Dunn, Field Associate of UNHCR San Diego – highlighting bi-national collaboration of the UN Refugee Agency with local organizations providing services on both sides of the US/Mexico border

• Womanaila Gerald, Founder and Executive Director of Echoes of Faith – sharing her journey to San Diego and current work facilitating the resettlement of African refugees

• Barry Simon, President of the United Nations Association of the USA, Southern California Division – delivering closing remarks

SCSC and the UNA groups are collaborating to spotlight how the UN Declaration of Human Rights has been a guide to ensure, as its preamble declares, “Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.”
