Atheist Magazine Needs Creative Artists!
ATHEISTS UNITED IS LOOKING FOR ARTISTS TO HELP US LAUNCH OUR NEW FULL-COLOR ANNUAL MAGAZINE.
2020 has delivered a blizzard of unwelcome stresses, and for Atheists United it was no different... except that we were already involved in an existential overhaul of our whole organization.
Founded in 1982 by a group of passionate atheists, by 2018 we had become a sclerotic group diligently carrying on the activities and practices established decades before, and steadily shrinking into a spot on the floor. Auspiciously, one long-time member left a significant bequest and the board resolved to hire an Executive Director (our first-ever) to help us analyze the situation and engineer a successful turnaround.
Now we've launched a spectrum of new programs and are heading toward our goal of redefining contemporary atheism and representing the burgeoning number of younger godless and their secular values, at an unprecedented level.
One of our first moves was to retire the monthly newsletter that had been published since the 80’s, but which very few people were still reading. In its place, we are rolling out a new, annual magazine that offers a recap of the year and focuses on issue(s) of particular importance for us going forward.
Now we are looking for a dramatic image conveying the idea of rebirth in stressful times. Initially, we were talking in terms of a phoenix image but are concerned that's an overused motif (though it could be great with the right perspective). The art we want would fill the entire 8.5 x 11 cover, in full color. Please understand that this is a new venture for us, and we do not have an established format. Our current plan is to overlay the magazine’s title and issue title on the top quarter of the page, but I am eager to discuss other options. Honestly, we’re feeling our way here and are open to suggestions.
Finished work will need to be submitted no later than September 25. The choice of medium would be up to you. We are, as a non-profit, on a limited budget and can only pay $500 for the work and discounts on that price would be gratefully accepted.
If you’d like to be one of the artists considered for this project please write our organizing committee whose work could fit well with our vision to contact directly about handling this assignment, and you are one of those. We will also be posting the job on social media. If this assignment is suitable for you, I am eager to answer any questions.
Sincerely,
Tom Bresnahan
