Trip Report: Science Sunday Kayak Adventure!

My name is Katie Reyes (she/her), and I have the pleasure of serving as your secretary for Atheists United. I wanted to take a moment to highlight the enlivening and unique Science Sunday field trip program that brought great thrill, high spirits, and connection to our community.

The sold-out LA River Kayaking Safari included 15 attendees, and three operators, including Steven Appleton, an impassioned authority on LA River restoration and revitalization. Our journey began with a short bicycle ride from Oso Park to the Taylor Yard Bridge, where Steven explained some of the recent restoration efforts that had taken place in the area.

We then peddled up to our launch location, where Steven described the history of the river, and even passed around objects that had been discovered in the river during the restoration. It all felt so intriguing, and after a quick kayaking tutorial on land, our private group was pumped and ready to embark downstream.

We navigated an intense water feature at the very beginning of the journey, which was several tight turns that led to a small waterfall that had everyone surprised. It was entertaining to watch and cheer on the others as they made their way down the falls. Steven would discuss the ecology and point out different species of birds and trees along the way. We continued downstream, taking in the diverse ecology thriving among the powerlines and freeway overpasses. The scenery and experience had such a cool LA vibe, which was even better to enjoy among kind people who share my values.

Science Sundays have become my favorite Atheists United program. From the Mount Wilson Observatory tour to the Rock Talk in Anza Borrego State Park, this thoughtful program always draws a diverse crowd, and is sure to offer something for everyone. It truly brings me much joy to connect with others in the secular community at these events.

Thank you for being an Atheists United supporter, and I hope to see you at our next Science Sunday on August 25th at the La Brea Tarpits

Atheists United offers Science Sunday experiences discounted from normal public ticket rates. If you can’t come to one, you can be an important part of the program when you donate to help keep the program affordable to all!
