California Wildfire Emergency Relief
Atheist Climate Crisis Recovery Fundraiser
As the climate crisis continues to punish California with ever hotter, drier seasons, the impacts are staggering. In 2020:
6000+ structures have been destroyed
at least 25 people are dead
fire-related air pollution is being breathed by millions of people, causing serious health risks
More than 3.4M acres have burned across the state
17,400 firefighters remain on the frontlines, representing the largest mobilization of fire crews in CA history
The magnitude and duration of the impacts are much more severe for marginalized communities. Emergency response and recovery efforts are failing to direct resources to those most adversely affected by the impacts of wildfires, including residents already facing economic hardship, racial discrimination, exploitation, incarceration, language barriers, and fear of deportation.
Atheists United is committed to taking action to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis. At a time when the hostility to science displayed by Christian nationalists is causing demonstrable suffering and death for millions of people, AU will be working to build a robust Atheist Climate Crisis Recovery program in the coming months, partnering with local communities on wildfire mitigation efforts, planning for climate refugees, and continuing to advocate for sound public policy.
First, we are launching an initial emergency fundraiser to respond to the immediate needs of vulnerable communities impacted by wildfires in California. The funds will go to two organizations:
Latino Community Foundation California Wildfire Relief Fund
The Latino Community Foundation supports Latino-led grassroots organizations that give critical financial assistance, rehousing support, and emergency translation for families displaced by the California Wildfires.
The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program
FFRP provides career support to formerly incarcerated firefighters and those currently incarcerated in California’s Conservation Camps who are interested in careers in the Wildland and Forestry sector. FFRP’s mission is to increase wildfire personnel from non-traditional and underrepresented communities with training, skills, resources, and the experiences needed to secure gainful employment.
Please join the atheist community in working to ensure vulnerable communities get the resources they need to survive the climate crisis. Let’s shine a light of hope together during this dark time.
Atheists United is a 501c3 and all donations are tax deductible. 100% of gifts to this campaign will be distributed directly to the two above charities.
